This blog introduces the story behind the development of Transformative Investment for systems change. It explains the rationale for convening investors to develop and implement an approach to Transformative Investment.

This post argues that the Second Deep Transition – a radical shift towards sustainability comparable in scale to the industrial revolution – will require substantial financial investment, estimated at USD 5-7.5 trillion annually. It emphasises the role of Transformative Investment in advancing this, an approach that goes beyond improving or optimising the efficiency of existing systems and instead seeks to transform them.

The authors introduce the Deep Transitions Futures project, which involved collaboration with investors and policy practitioners, with the aim of bridging the gap between investment practices and the need for systemic change over three phases:

  • building a shared understanding of the theory and sustainable investing;
  • creating alternative future worlds, to reimagine scenarios for the planet in the year 2050; and
  • developing new tools and metrics to help enact Transformative Investment.
