Knowledge communities are crucial for systemic change, as they facilitate the co‑creation of actionable knowledge, support ongoing experimentation, and help embed transformative thinking into policy and practice.
This journal article explores how communities of practice can be created and sustained to generate, integrate, and use the diverse knowledge needed for Transformative Innovation Policy.
Using the TIP Conference 2022 as a case study, the authors analyse what kinds of structures, practices, and tangible/intangible resources (such as digital spaces, networks, learning and unlearning processes, and shared visions) are required to build a knowledge infrastructure that supports collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and geographies.
The paper highlights how deliberately designed interactions and shared platforms help broaden and deepen networks, enable multi‑directional learning, and align diverse perspectives, and helps to identify the concrete mechanisms and conditions that help bring together different actors – researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and others – into communities of practice.
