This concept note introduces the fundamentals of the Deep Transitions Lab, which aims to support investors in driving system-level change.

The Lab is built upon the Deep Transitions project, which developed principles for Transformative Investment grounded in the understanding of large-scale societal shifts. The goal was to move beyond traditional investment approaches in order to address interconnected global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality.

The note shows how the Lab focuses on three core elements:

  • Experimentation: Collaborating with investors to develop practical skills and knowledge in applying transformative investment principles
  • Research: Refining existing and creating new tools and metrics to identify opportunities for systems change
  • Learning and outreach: Providing training, workshops, and resources for a wide audience including investors, policymakers, and researchers to build capacity and foster a community of practice

It also introduces the experimentation programme, and the types of experiments this involves.

Acknowledgements

With support from Bailee Gifford, the Deep Transitions project convened historians, sustainability transition scholars, innovation experts and a panel of public and private investors to co-produce a new approach for financing transformation and long-term system change. This process led to the conceptualisation of the Deep Transitions Lab.

Our thanks to Naz Costante for design.
