This policy report sets out how transformative innovation laboratories can support systemic responses to complex societal challenges such as sustainability, climate change, and social inequality.
Transformative innovation laboratories are collaborative experimental spaces where governments, universities, businesses, and civil society work together to explore new solutions, test ideas, and learn collectively in order to guide long-term social and economic transformation. The report links these laboratories to TIP and sustainability transitions frameworks by recognising innovation as a process aimed at the transformation of socio-technical systems.
Within the context of the Government of Catalonia’s RIS3CAT 2030 smart specialisation strategy, initiatives such as shared agendas and innovation labs help to nurture new practices, build coalitions, create shared visions, and scale experimental solutions, contributing to long-term transitions.
